Benefits

Participants in the Intelligent Access Program (IAP) may soon realise the benefits that the IAP provides in terms of business performance opportunities, safety, efficiency and productivity. In reaping the benefits they will also recognise the vital role they will play in sustaining our national road network.

Benefits to the transport operator
Generally speaking, transport operators, who participate in the IAP, are granted enhanced or less restricitve access to the road network by the relevant Jurisdiction (road authority). Access may be in the form of carrying more mass, operating longer vehicles or more trailers, operating during specific hours. This means that transport operators may be able to travel on routes they would not otherwise be allowed to access.

Transport operators may wish to demonstrate their commitment to meeeting chain of responsibilty obligations.

Transport operators need to make a commercial decision and determine if the benefits of participating in the IAP outweigh the costs of participation. Schemes and permits made available by Jurisdictions may suit some transport operators but not others. However, the IAP can be used by individual transport operators as a means of negotiating specific access conditions with road authorities and local councils in some cases, to suit their specific business operations.

By selecting an IAP Service Provider, a transport operator may experience additional benefits such as improved service delivery and reliability from organisations that have been certified against a standard set of functional and technical requirements. By combining commercial and regulatory requirements from the one IAP Service Provider, the transport operator may recieve a better return on their telematics investment.

Benefits to Jurisdictions as stewards of the road network
The IAP provides Jurisdictions with a method to better manage and provide for the growing transport task. In doing so, the IAP ensures that any improved access has the necessary compliance assurance.

Benefits to stakeholders:

  • increases road transport industry efficiency and productivity
  • provides for safer, more productive and compliant heavy vehicle operation
  • reduces compliance costs through more efficient administration procedures
  • promotes sustainable road infrastructure
  • increases the range of concessions road authorities can offer transport operators
  • optimises road freight policy, including on-road enforcement activities
  • improves road safety
  • improves public perception of heavy vehicle movement management
  • reduces environmental effects
