IAP presents to logistics' leading lights
Thursday, 12 October 2006
The Intelligent Access Program (IAP) was the source of robust discussion and intense interest at a recent logistics forum.
Innovate Collaborate 06 played host to senior logistics managers from over 50 major companies including Coles Myer, Fosters, Simplot, Smorgon, Murray Goulburn and many others – brought together to explore the opportunities to innovate and collaborate in the logistics space.
As one of the day’s keynote presenters, Sandy McKendrick, General Counsel, Transport Certification Australia (TCA) drew attention to his organisation’s collaborative alliance with the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) – an undertaking aiming to bring together freight operators, regulators, Government and logistics customers in exploring the benefits and potential scope of IAP.
“Innovation wise, this is a world first. Elsewhere, in Europe for example, there has been limited application of some elements of this program – but not in its entirety, not on this level, not utilising satellite technology and networks and not of an evidentiary standard,” Mr McKendrick said.
The inaugural event, an initiative of the VTA’s Logistics Managers Group (LMG) addressed key logistics and supply chain issues. Addresses, presentations, panels, case studies, round table discussions and practical demonstrations from representatives of senior industry, government, academia and consulting, gave attendees a full range of opportunities to engage and interact.
Focused discussions, and a brief Q&A highlighted industry calls for IAP to adopt an industry standard approach, and pointed to its advantages and benefits as a business management tool. Freight owners, logistics providers, and technology vendors pointed to the potential benefits of IAP as an innovative means of stimulating a new wave of productivity improvements in TDL.
Mr McKendrick emphasised that, “All of this is consistent with the IAP offering, its aims and its intended purpose. IAP places a focus on the evidentiary nature of the GPS tracking data collected. Rather than enforcement as such, IAP is a collaborative and voluntary tool, that allows monitoring on those routes where permits are granted.”
“Chain of Responsibility and compliance, profitability, productivity through route access, a variety of telematics solutions, some of which may well be accommodated through existing GPS – IAP is all about the innovative collaboration that is the subject and recurring theme of this conference,” he concluded.
A mini-expo held in conjunction with the event, featuring a TCA stand and a live audio/visual presentation also drew attention from attendees. TCA was a foundation sponsor of Innovate Collaborate 06.
