TCA ENTERS LICENCE AGREEMENT WITH PSMA AUSTRALIA
27 February 2006
Transport Certification Australia Limited today announced it has moved one step closer to implementing the Intelligent Access Program by entering a licence agreement with PSMA Australia to use its Transport & Topography™ dataset.
The Transport & Topography™ dataset is underpinned by a road centreline layer and encompasses nearly two million kilometres of named Australian roads and constitutes the most complete representation of the road infrastructure network available in Australia.
This road information will be used as a base reference to determine spatial (or route) compliance by transport operators participating in the Intelligent Access Program (IAP).
The IAP is a voluntary program that provides heavy vehicles with access, or improved access, to the Australian road network in return for monitoring of compliance with specific access conditions by vehicle telematic solutions.
TCA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Chris Koniditsiotis, said PSMA Australia’s Transport & Topography™ dataset provides the most comprehensive and widespread mapping solution which is critical for the success of the IAP.
“Obtaining the Transport & Topography™ dataset licence is a significant milestone towards implementing the IAP. It allows TCA to generate the Intelligent Access Map that will be used by organisations participating in the IAP,” Mr Koniditsiotis said.
“Each road authority will be able to use the Intelligent Access Map to electronically identify the roads that transport operators can access within the IAP.
“The data collected by the telematics device, which is installed on a vehicle, will be overlaid onto the Intelligent Access Map and accessed against a road authority’s approved route to determine a transport operator’s compliance,” said Mr Koniditsiotis.
PSMA Australia is an initiative of the state, territory and Commonwealth governments of Australia and draws of the geospatial data resources of the governments to build and deliver key national spatial information datasets.
PSMA Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Dan Paull, said PSMA Australia is the nation’s leading source of authoritative spatial information datasets that underpin a wide range of important national initiatives and he was pleased to add the IAP to that list.
“For PSMA Australia, the ability to partner with TCA in order to deliver a significant national program, such as the IAP, is important to us. It further demonstrates that our datasets and maintenance techniques are designed for a wide range of uses that deliver economic, environmental and social benefits to Australia,” said Mr Paull.
