Transport Certification Australia Limited (TCA) has produced a report on the most suitable ways to attain communication interoperability of Trailer Monitoring Devices (TMDs).
The Options for Trailer Monitoring Device Interoperability report is part of the study undertaken by TCA, on behalf of Australia’s road transport authorities, into developing a national standard to permit interoperability between any Intelligent Access Program (IAP) certified in-vehicle unit (IVU) and TMDs.
There is significant evidence from the transport industry to show the benefits of a national standard would permit greater operational functionality and optimisation of use of heavy vehicle trailers. Additionally, road transport authorities see this as providing greater flexibility in IAP-based access conditions.
Based on the Industry Capability report released earlier this year and feedback from industry, this report proposes a number of interoperability options. To ensure a full understanding of the response to the report, TCA is seeking comments and feedback from:
- The transport industry as end users of trailer monitoring systems – ideally undertaking transport tasks on public roads;
- The telematics industry;
- The road traffic authorities; and
- Trailer manufacturers and TMD developers and suppliers.
The Request for Comment: Interoperability of Trailer Monitoring Devices – Options, poses a number of specific questions to industry regarding the report findings, as well as seeking general comments.
TCA would appreciate any feedback and comments on the Options for Trailer Monitoring Device Interoperability report by Friday, 26 October 2007 to be sent to Mr Shaun Talko – TCA Senior Operations Engineer, email: shaunt@tca.gov.au.

There is also an opportunity to learn more about the findings of the interoperability study at two sessions during Freight Week 2007 in Melbourne. The sessions are:
- Wednesday, 19 September 2007 (RFID and wireless tracking) Ms Thea Robotis, TCA Communications Manager presenting an update on the Intelligent Access Program and Dr Chris Blanksby from ARRB presenting (on behalf of TCA) the findings of the Interoperability of Trailer Monitoring Devices study
- Friday, 21 September 2007 (Innovate Collaborate 2007)Ms Thea Robotis, TCA Communications Manager presenting an update on the Intelligent Access Program and Mr Shaun Talko, TCA Senior Operations Engineer presenting the findings of the Interoperability of Trailer Monitoring Devices study
