Request for comment: Heavy vehicle on-board mass monitoring feasibility

Tuesday, 4 September 2007

Transport Certification Australia Limited (TCA) has moved to the next stage of its study into the possibility of adding on-board mass monitoring to the Intelligent Access Program (IAP) with the release of a capability review report.

The Heavy Vehilce On-Board Mass Monitoring - Capability Review is the outcome of extensive engagement with the transport industry, including members of the telematics industry together with developers, suppliers and end-users of on-board vehicle mass-monitoring options.

The availability of on-board vehicle mass-monitoring as part of the IAP will ultimately benefit the transport industry by providing greater functionality to the IAP, increasing the range of IAP uses that can be implemented.

According to the report, Australia has a viable and experienced on-board mass monitoring industry, ‘arguably the best in the world in terms of multiple trailer combinations and in ruggedness of operations’.

Further appraisal, in collaboration with the transport industry, is needed in the key areas of accuracy and tamer evidence and confirmation of the robustness findings.

As part of this process TCA has released the Request for Comment: Heavy Vehicle On-Board Mass Monitoring: Capability Review, inviting feedback from the transport industry on the report’s findings and proposals.

TCA would appreciate any feedback and comments on the report by Friday, 26 October 2007.  These should be sent to Thea Robotis at Transport Certification Australia, email: thear@tca.gov.au.
